Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
