Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
