Former Prime Minister Tsipras Asserts Yanis Varoufakis Proved ‘Unfit’ as Greek Treasury Chief During Financial Meltdown

In a freshly published personal account, named Ithaki, the former leader Tsipras does not hold back while he examines the turbulent period of Greece's economic turmoil.

A Controversial Choice

In Tsipras's recollections, he selected the maverick academic Yanis Varoufakis to be the finance minister primarily because of his worldwide fame along with his very persuasive abilities as a public orator.

“He was, actually, more of a celebrity rather than an economist,” stated the 51-year-old.

Conflicting Agendas

Tsipras suggests that his finance chief possessed a personal motives which included advancing his books as well as testing out his own economic models on the nation instead of truly fighting for its financial survival.

Tsipras explained how the discussions to avoid insolvency were “not just a method of achieving improved terms for Greece. They became an experiment, a monumental opportunity to prove the validity of his theories.”

Critical Talks

Amid volatile discussions, the country came dangerously on the brink of leaving the eurozone.

On the line was both the country's destiny and those harsh austerity policies demanded in return for rescue loans from foreign lenders.

Failed Alternatives

Attempts to secure financing elsewhere, including a desperate appeal to the Kremlin to purchase Greek government bonds, were rejected.

Assisting the indebted country was equivalent to tossing cash into the garbage, the Russian leader is reputed to have told Tsipras in Moscow.

Referendum and Reversal

That summer, the harsh conditions were put to a popular referendum, a move which plunged Europe into a deeper crisis of identity.

Although the vote was carried resoundingly by voters who opposed the cuts, Tsipras was forced but to ignore the result and agree to a rescue deal from foreign lenders that proved to be more severe.

Final Straw

Tsipras revealed that he began to doubt his finance minister quite early on.

“He was the face of the talks, the figure who attracted publicity, who graced the covers of magazines the world over … it seemed he relished his new role.”

When the minister proposed a backup strategy involving creating a parallel currency as well as distributing coupons to retirees, Tsipras said he realised it was game over questioning him: “Are you serious?”

Enduring Rebuke

Within the memoir, the author asserts that his former ally demonstrated himself “unfit for a deal that required complex and delicate handling.”

Tsipras further claimed how his aggressive style left him more and more alone among peers, endangered the country, while assisted hardliners who were advocating a Greek exit from the euro.

This account of events has provoked anger along with stunned disbelief among certain groups, while Varoufakis has kept a deafening silence regarding these claims.
