EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
